Burg Sommeregg

Day 2 / Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018:
My host brother, Wolfgang, made me coffee every morning. :)
Typical breakfast in this region - Schwarzbrot or "Kärntner Bauernbrot" (Farmer's bread made of rye and wheat flours) with butter and a jam. I ate this nearly every day during my year abroad. Prepared with Vati’s homemade red currant jam. (Leftover lunch meat was also offered)
Wolfgang and Angelina :)
Gmünd:
My travel notes said there was a store in Gmünd (Artsy Village next to my host family) that sold my favorite ceramics on Kirchengasse (Church alley). Many villages have this street name. We found the street, but not this store! Hmmmmmm...Then, after 10 minutes or so, Wolfgang said, "There is a second Gmünd." Ahhhh!!! The one I needed was in northern Austria and next to the Czech Republic border! LOL.

11 am Pfarrkirche's church bells
I see that I cropped out the cemetery...Trying to keep things upbeat, as usual!
The church bells came from here! - Pfarrkirche (a Catholic church)
Self service for eggs and potatoes!
 Kasse = register!
If I did the math correctly, there is no deal here if you buy in bulk! They still come out to .35 Euro per egg regardless if you buy a carton or 4 cartons!

Burg Sommeregg  - a 13th century fortress:
After Gmünd, Wolfgang and I drove 20 minutes south to the Sommeregg fortress in Seeboden.
Look who was just leaving when we arrived! Little Gustav & his wife Martina! (They were visiting from Graz and staying with my host brother, Gustav, and his wife, Suvi, up the street from my host family)
THROWBACK of my brother, David, when he visited me for Xmas back in 1989 at the same fortress!
As you can see, the views were gorgeous.

Wolfgang's shot of me
Prost!
Fritattensuppe to start. It was delicious.
Burgpfandl (literally means fortress in a skillet) - this was excellent. Juicy pork steak with mushroom cream sauce, buttery spätzle, and veggies. Wolfgang had the grill platter - 3 different meats with fries.
Quick pic as I was going outside to use the restroom! This was the bar area.

Domitian von Kärnten statue in Millstatt:
After lunch at the fortress, we drove 5 miles to Millstätter lake.
Ahhhhh! S ome English for a change! Villa Verdin looks gorgeous.
Shrines are all over the region.

Kap - The Pyramid in Lake Millstatt:
We had the perfect day to enjoy the pyramid!
Warm enough to sit outside!
View from my left! I loved it.
The house-made spiked punch was delicious. Wolfgang had a coffee.

Back home in Trebesing:

When we got home, Vati had prepped apple strudel!!! I was so touched. When my host mother used to make it, she had that dough stretched across the kitchen table. Vati did a slight cheat and used store bought filo dough, however, the inside was authentic. (Vati didn't use a recipe for the filling -- he's got it down pat from learning from his mother and also my late host mother.)
